George McCleary의 지도하에 지도 제작을 연구하였으며, 클라크대학교 지리학과에서 박사학위를 받았다. 그는 스미스소니언 박물관의 Power of Map 전시실에서 큐레이터로 근무하였으며, 지도에 대한 많은 저술을 하였다. 최근 저술로는 『The Nature of Maps』(University of Chicago Press, 2008), 『Rethinking the Power of Maps』(Guiford Press, 2010), 『Everything Sings: Maps for a Narrative Atlas』(Siglio, 2011)가 있다. 그는 노스캐롤라이나주립대학교의 전직 디자인 교수였으며, 현재는 노스캐롤라이나 주 롤리에서 학술 활동을 하고 있다(deniswood.net 참고).
