중국 공산당사와 지식인을 연구하는 캐나다 역사학자이다. 호주국립대학교에서 아시아학 수료 후 버지니아 대학에서 역사학 석사 학위를 받았다. 이후 하버드 대학에서 동아시아 언어학 박사학위를 취득했다. 콜로라도 대학에서 근무하다 2002년부터 브리티시 컬럼비아 대학에서 역사학과 교수로 재임 중이다. 동대학 아시아연구소에서 중국연구센터의 책임자이며 루이스 차Louis Cha, 金庸 석좌교수이다. 2002년부터 2009년까지 저널 Pacific Affairs의 편집장을 지냈다. 저서로는 Living with Reform: China since 1989, MaoZedong and China’s Revolutions: A Brief History with Documents, A Critical Introduction to Mao, Propaganda and Culture in Mao’s China: Deng Tuo and the Intelligentsia, 편저서로는 China’s Establishment Intellectuals, China’s Intellectuals and the State: In Search of a New Relationship, The Secret Speeches of Chairman Mao, New Perspectives on State Socialism in China, Mao’s Road to Power: Revolutionary Writings, 1912-1949, Vol. VIII, 1942-August 1945, The Chinese Communist Party: A Century in Ten Lives 등이 있으며, 이외 다수의 논문이 있다.
