런던대 로얄 홀로웨이 대학의 연극공연학과(Theatre and Performance) 교수이자 사회과학 예술학부의 공동학장이다. 또한 2004년부터 RiDE: Journal of Applied Theatre and Performance의 공편자로 활동하고 있기도 하다. 헬렌 니콜슨은 Applied Drama: The Gift of Theatre(2005, second edition 2014), Theatre & Education(2009), 그리고 2012년 연극과 교육을 위한 미국 연합회(the American Alliance for Theatre and Education) 우수 도서상(the Distinguished Book Award)을 수상한 Theatre, Education and Performance(2011)의 저자이기도 하다.

맨체스터 대학의 드라마 학과의 부교수이다. 그녀의 대표 출판업적으로는 연극과 공연 연구 협회(the Theatre and Performance Research Association)의 신인 연구자상(New Career Research prize)을 공동 수상한 Performance in a Time of Terror(2011), 제임스 톰프슨(James Thompson), 마이클 밸푸어(Michael Balfour)와 공동 집필한 저서인 Performance in Place of War(2009)가 있다.
