영국 케임브리지 퀸스칼리지를 졸업하고 옥스퍼드대학교에서 공부했다. 더럼대학교와 미국육군사관학교 등에서 강의했고, 현재는 영국 엑서터대학교 역사학과 명예교수다. 유럽 정치사와 외교사, 전쟁사, 지도를 주로 연구하고 있다. 《전쟁과 세계(War and the World)》와 《공군력(Air Power)》을 비롯한 군사사 분야에서 폭넓게 저술 활동을 하고 있으며, 주요 저서로는 《지도와 역사(Maps and History)》와 《해전(Naval Warfare)》 등이 있고, 국내에 번역된 저서로는 《메트로폴리스》, 《인류의 역사》, 《전쟁은 왜 일어나는가》, 《세계 지도의 역사》, 《빅뱅에서 인류의 미래까지 빅 히스토리》(공저) 등이 있다.
