옥스퍼드대학교에서 심리학 박사학위를 받고 20년 이상 학습 및 마음에 대한 저술과 강의로 국제적인 명성을 얻었다. 창의적 사고법부터 불교철학에 이르기까지 다양한 주제를 통해 ‘서서히 스며드는 배움’의 효용과 가치를 역설하고, 평생교육에 내몰린 사람들을 위한 효과적인 학습법을 탐색하고 있다. 지은 책으로는 『전체적 인간』(1981), 『탐색하는 마음 키우기』(1991), 『어두운 방에서 들려오는 소음: 마음의 과학과 미스터리』(1994), 『다루기 힘든 마음: 무의식의 친밀한 역사』(2006), 『학교의 핵심은 무엇인가』(2008), 『포괄적인 교육』(2013) 등 10여 권이 있으며, ‘Times Educational Supplement' ‘New Scientist' ‘Arena' 등 여러 학술지에 기고문을 냈다. 영국 윈체스터대학교에서 현실 세계 학습센터(Centre for Real-World Learning)를 설립하고 연구소장을 역임했으며, 현재 학습과학 명예교수로 재직 중이다. 영국 심리학협회 회원으로 있으며, 학습과 마음, 창의성에 관한 컨설팅과 강연을 하며 활동 중이다.
