시카고 대학교 정치학과 티파니 앤드 마거릿 블레이크 석좌교수이자, 시카고 대학교 민주주의 연구소 소장이다. 하버드 대학교 래드클리프에서 인류학을 전공하고, 스탠퍼드 대학교에서 인류학 석사 학위를, 1988년에는 동 대학교에서 정치학 박사 학위를 취득했다. 워싱턴 대학교, 예일 대학교 등에서 교수를 역임했다. 2025년 9월 미국정치학회(American Political Science Association) 회장으로 취임했으며, 미국 예술 과학 아카데미(American Academy of Arts and Sciences)와 미국 학술원(National Academy of Sciences) 회원이기도 하다. 주요 연구 분야는 라틴아메리카 정치, 비교 정치, 개발도상국의 민주주의 작동 방식 등이다. 지은 책으로 《위임과 민주주의(Mandates and Democracy: Neoliberalism by Surprise in Latin America)》《중개인, 유권자, 후원주의(Brokers, Voters, and Clientelism: The Puzzle of Distributive Politics)》(공저) 등이 있다.
