예일대학교 의과대학원 법·정신의학부 임상조교수. 폭력 연구 분야의 세계적 전문가. 한국계 미국인으로 하버드대학교와 예일대학교에서 의학 및 정신건강의학 학위를 받았으며 미국국립정신건강연구소 NIMH에서 의료 인류학을 연구했다. 벨뷰병원에서 수련의 과정을 거친 뒤 매사추세츠 종합병원에서 수석 레지던트로, 하버드대학교 의학대학원 연구원으로 일했다. 예일대학교 폭력과 건강 연구 그룹Violence and Health Study Group을 공동 설립했으며, 미국 캘리포니아와 코네티컷, 매사추세츠 주정부 뿐 아니라 아일랜드와 프랑스 정부, UN, 세계보건기구 등에 공동체 내 폭력 예방 프로그램 관련 자문 활동을 펼쳐 왔다. 그동안 100편 이상의 논문을 발표했으며, 《폭력Violence》을 비롯한 다수의 저서를 집필했다.
