리하이대학교(학사, 1966) 및 동대학원(석사, 1967)을 졸업했으며, 프랑스 소르본대학교(1968년 여름)와 낭테르대학교(1971~1972)에서 수학한 후, 스탠퍼드대학교 대학원(박사, 1973)에서 현대철학을 전공했다. 대표저서로는 『피아제, 철학과 인문학』(1980), 『장-폴 사르트르 : 그의 철학에 대한 현대적 접근』(1980), 『미국에서의 대륙비평』(1983), 『묘사』(1985), 『해석학과 해체주의』(1985), 『비평적이고 변증법적인 현상학』(1987), 『각인(刻印) : 현상학과 구조주의 사이』(1987), 『대륙비평의 지평 : 후설, 하이데거 및 메를로퐁티론』(1988), 『포스트모더니즘과 대륙철학』(1988), 『텍스트적 장엄미 : 해체주의와 그것의 차이들』(1989), 『차이의 정치학』(1991) 등을 저술하거나 편저했다. 아울러 ‘루틀리지출판사’의 ‘대륙철학’ 시리즈의 책임편집자로서 『메를로퐁티 이후의 철학과 비-철학』(1988), 『데리다와 해체주의』(1989), 『포스트모더니즘 : 철학과 예술』(1990), 『가다머와 해석학』(1991), 『근본에 대한 질문 : 진리/주관성/문화』(1993) 등을 편저했다. 뉴욕대학교, 뒤케스네대학교, 프랑스 니스대학교, 영국 워윅대학교와 리즈대학교, 이탈리아 토리노대학교, 오스트리아 빈대학교 등에서 방문교수와 초빙교수로서 강의를 했으며, ‘현상학과실존주의철학회’의 상임편집위원으로 활동했으며(1980~1986), ‘현상학과문학국제학회(IAPL)’ 상임위원으로 활동하고 있다(1987~현재). 현재 뉴욕주립대학교(스토니브룩 캠퍼스)의 철학과와 비교문화학과 교수로 재직하고 있다(1974~2012 현재).
