미국의 사회학자. 뉴욕의 신사회연구소에서 사회학을 공부하였으며 현재 뉴욕 주립대학(알바니)에서 사회학을 강의하고 있다. 주요 저서로는 <자유주의와 유럽사회이론의 기원>이 있으며, 최근에는 <포스트모던으로의 전환: 사회이론의 새로운 관점>을 편집하였다. 제프리 알렉산더와 함께 편집한 <문화와 사회>는 국내에도 번역 출간되어 있다. 사이드먼은 유럽의 학문적 전통과 깊이에 관심을 갖고, 지나치게 과학적이고 실용주의적인 미국의 사회학을 비판하는 입장에 있는 사회이론가이다.
