하버드대학을 졸업하고 캘리포니아대학과 위스콘신대학에서 역사학과 지리학으로 박사 과정을 밟았다. 바사르 칼리지에서 역사학과 지리학을 가르친 후 전임연구원이 되었고, 그후 미국지리학회에서 일하다가 1972년 런던대학(ULC) 지리학과장이 되었다. 1956~7년에는 서인도대학에서 풀브라이트 연구 과정을 가졌고, 그때 서인도대학과 런던의 인종관계연구소를 위해 일했다. 1965년 구겐하임 펠로우십을 수상한 로웬덜 교수는 하버드대학에서 조경학 초빙교수, MIT에서 정치학 초빙교수, 뉴욕시립대학에서 환경심리학 초빙교수, 캘리포니아대학ㆍ워싱턴대학ㆍ미네소타대학ㆍ클라크대학에서 지리학 초빙교수를 지냈다. 지은 책으로는 <조지 퍼킨스 마시>가 있다.
