미국의 저명한 경제학자이자 연방준비제도이사회의 14대 의장이다. 하버드대학교 경제학과를 졸업하고, 매사추세츠공과대학교(MIT)에서 경제학 박사학위를 받았다. 스탠퍼드대학교와 프린스턴대학교에서 경제학 교수로 재직했으며, 2002년 9월부터 연방준비제도이사회 위원을 근 3년간 역임한 후 2005년 6월부터는 백악관 대통령경제자문위원회 의장을 맡았다. 이후 2006년 2월 앨런 그린스펀의 뒤를 이어 미국 연방준비제도이사회 의장으로 취임, “대공황 이후 최악의 경제 위기”인 글로벌 금융위기에 맞서 세계 경제를 진두지휘했다. 버냉키 전前 의장은 역사상 유례없는 비전통적 통화정책으로 글로벌 금융위기와 뒤이은 대침체에 효과적으로 대응했다고 평가받으며, 2009년에는 『타임』지의 올해의 인물로 선정되기도 했다. 2014년 1월 자넷 옐런 신임 의장의 취임과 함께 연방준비제도이사회 의장직 에서 퇴임했다. 주요 저서로는 Essays on the Great Depression, Inflation Targeting: Lessons from the International Experience(공저), Principles of Economics(공저) 등이 있다.
