전 세계적으로 가장 널리 알려져 있는 사회학자 가운데 한 명이며, 현재 뉴욕시립대학(CUNY)과 웨스턴시드니대학의 교수이다. 종교사회학, 몸의 사회학, 사회 이론, 인권사회학, 시민권 이론 등이 주요 관심 분야이다. 『몸과 사회(Body & Society)』, 『시민권 연구(Citizenship Studies)』, 『고전 사회학 논집(Journal of Classical Sociology)』 등의 학술지 초대 편집장이며 『영국사회학회지(British Journal of Sociology)』, 『유럽사회이론논집(European Journal of Social Theory)』 등의 학술지 편집위원이다. 『시민권과 자본주의(Citizenship and Capitalism: The Debate over Reformism)』(1986), 『막스 베버(Max Weber: From History to Modernity)』(1992), 『몸과 사회(The Body and Society: Explorations in Social Theory)』(1996), 『취약성과 인권(Vulnerability and Human Rights)』(2006), 『종교와 현대 사회(Religion and Modern Society: Citizenship, Secularisation and the State)』(2011) 등 70권 이상의 책을 쓰거나 편집했다.
