영국 케임브리지 대학, 웨스트민스트 대학을 거쳐 1984년부터 미국 펜실베이니아 건축대학원장을 역임했고 현재는 동 대학 명예교수로 있다. 2020년 건축 교육에 기여한 공로로 토파즈 메달리온상을 수상했다. 그의 연구는 건축, 정원, 도시의 역사와 이론의 영역을 포괄한다. 저서로는 『Building time: architecture, event, and experience』, 『20th Century Architecture』, 『Roots of Architectural Invention』 등이 있다.
