셰필드대학교에서 학부를 졸업하고 캠브리지대학교에서 지리교사자격인증석사과정을 수료한 후 중등학교에서 약 12년 정도 지리를 가르쳤다. 그 후 지금까지 런던대학교 교육전문대학원 교수로 재직하고 있고 있으며, 현재는 영국지리교육학회 회장이기도 하다. 주요 연구분야는 교육과정 개발, 교사의 전문성 개발, 교과서 연구, 평가, 시민성교육 등 다방면에 걸쳐 있으며, 왕성한 저술 활동을 해오고 있다.
