해밀턴(Hamilton) 대학교 비교문학과 교수이며 학과장이다. 저서로는 Before Reading(1987), Authorizing Readers(마이클(Michael)과 공동저술, 1998) 등이 있다. 또한 비평가이자 레코드 음악잡지 <팡파르(Fanfare)>의 객원 편집자이다. 제임스 펠란(James Phelan)과 공동 편집으로, 오하이오 주립대학교 출판부의 서술이론 학술지 연속물 발간을 담당하고 있다.
