프랑스의 철학자·사회학자·정치학자·역사학자·언론인으로, 전체주의·자유주의·공산주의·국제 관계 연구에 큰 공헌을 한 20세기 프랑스의 가장 저명한 사상가 중 한 명이다. 1924년 고등사범학교에 입학했으며, 그곳에서 친구이자 평생 지적 반대자인 사르트르를 만났다. 1928년 철학 교수 자격시험에 수석으로 합격했으며, 1930년대 초 베를린 소재 프랑스 연구소에 머무르면서 독일 철학과 사회학에 깊은 관심을 가졌고, 나치즘의 부상을 직접 목격하기도 했다. 제2차 세계대전이 발발하자 런던으로 건너가 〈라 프랑스 리브르(La France libre)〉지의 편집장으로 활동하면서 드골 장군과 함께 조국의 해방을 위해 노력했다. 귀국 후에는 〈콩바(Combat)〉〈르 피가로(Le Figaro)〉 등에서 언론인으로 활동했다. 1955~1967년 소르본 대학교 사회학 교수로 근무했으며, 1970년 콜레주 드 프랑스 현대 문명 사회학 교수로 선출되어 1978년까지 재직했다. 주요 저서로 우리나라에서도 번역 출판된 《지식인의 아편(L’opium des intellectuels)》을 비롯해, 《회고록(Mémoires)》《폭력의 역사와 변증법(Histoire et dialectique de la violence)》《사회사상의 흐름(Les étapes de la pensée sociologique)》《민주주의와 전체주의(Démocratie et totalitarisme)》《계급 투쟁(La lutte de classes)》《국가 간의 전쟁과 평화(Paix et guerre entre les nations)》《역사철학 입문(Introduction à la philosophie de l’histoire)》《현대 독일 사회학(La sociologie allemande contemporaine)》 등이 있다.
