1897년 영국 런던에서 태어났다. 교육자 겸 아동문학가로 평생을 어린이를 위한 교육과 작품 활동에 몰두하여 미스터리, 모험, 학교, 유머, 판타지 등 다양한 장르에 걸친 600권 이상의 책을 썼다. 1968년 생을 마쳤다. 대표작으로는 전세계적으로 유명한 영유아도서 <Noddy 시리즈>를 비롯, <The Famous Five>, <The Secret Seven> 등의 미스터리 시리즈, <Malory Towers>, <St. Clare>, <The Naughtiest Girl> 등의 학원물, <The Magic Faraway Tree>, <The Enchanted Wood>, <The Wishing Chair> 등의 판타지소설이 있다. 이 책들은 대부분 다양한 TV프로그램과 애니메이션으로 제작되었다.
