1938년생으로 라이게이트 컬리지 오브 아트(Reigate College of Art)에서 교육을 받았다. 왕립연대 1대대(1st Bn, Queen’s Royal Regiment)에서 군복무를 했으며, 1960년대에 호평을 받은 잡지 <파인딩 아웃>의 아트 에디터로 근무했다. 그 이후 프리랜서 일러스트레이터로 활동하고 있다. 특히 아메리카 인디언의 문화에 대한 깊은 지식으로 세계적인 명성을 얻었다. 또한 오스프리(Osprey) 출판사의 30권이 넘는 책에 삽화를 그렸다.
