네덜란드 에라스무스 대학에서 경제학과 철학을 공부했고, 박사학위를 받은 후 <퍼스 에디션 프로젝트>에 참여하였고, 현재 『트랜잭션(Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society)』의 편집장을 맡고 있다. 퍼스, 조지 허버트, 그리고 실용주의에 관한 책을 출간하였으며, 수잔 하크, 뉴리얼리즘, 그리고 그 외에 많은 논문들을 출판하였다. 인디애나폴리스에 소재한 인디아나대학교-퍼듀대학교의 철학 교수로 재직하고 있다.
