맨해튼빌대학교에서 철학을, 컬럼비아대학교와 뉴욕의 유니온신학교에서 로마가톨릭 신학을 공부했다. 1977년부터 2009년까지 디트로이트머시대학교에서 종교학 및 여성학과 교수로 가르쳤고, 1984년에는 <뉴욕타임즈>지에 다원주의와 낙태에 관한 가톨릭 성명서 캠페인에 동참했다. Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion의 공동편집자로 있었다. 학위 논문은 The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (1981)였고, 대표작으로 본서 『사생아 예수』(The Illegitimacy of Jesus 1987)가 있다. 그 외 저서로는 The Resurrection of Mary Magdalene (2002); Mary Magdalene Understood (공저, 2006); The Death and Resurrection of the Author and other feminist essays on the Bible (2012)가 있다.
