책 소개
This is a paperbound reprint of a 1991 book. The history of osteopathic medicine is combined with the biography of its pioneer, former Union Army doctor Andrew Taylor Still, in this historically rich work by Trowbridge. Still's wartime experiences and the loss of three of his children to disease in 1864, led the Virginia-born physician to lose faith in the medicinal practices of his day and, ten years later, to develop osteopathy --a philosophical, holistic and naturalistic practice in which the human body's ability to heal itself is initiated or aided by musculoskeletal manipulation. Approximately 50 black-and-white photographs, illustrations and letters, and extensive footnotes and references complement this account of Still's radical departure from early American medicine and his founding in 1892 of the American School of Osteopathy. A detailed photo album of the Still family is included as an appendix, and a selected bibliography is also provided. Annotation ⓒ2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
