?
Chapter 2-Concepts of Neurophysiology
In this chapter, the basic neurophysiological principle necessary is presented, to better understand the next chapter on the neurophysiology of pain. The chapter is presented in a practical way by making links with clinical approaches.???????????????
?
Chapter 3-Pain Neurophysiology
Chapter 3 will be completely updated with new information on the neurophysiology of pain. Our knowledge of the neurophysiology of pain has evolved considerably since the publication of the first edition of the book. The outline of the chapter goes from the periphery to the brain, with an emphasis on the nociceptive responses and on the structures that participate in sensitizing the pain response. New data on the role of the central nervous system in the affective components involved in the development of chronic pain will be developed. These data will always be presented taking into account clinical practice.?
Chapter 4-Pain Theories
Chapter 4 describes the evolution of pain theories and how the clinical practice is dependent on the development of our knowledge, but also how ancient theories may still affect modern clinical practice.
?
Chapter 5-Measuring pain
An elaborate description of the different pain measurement scales, including affective components and the recommendation of authorities on the best scales to be used in clinical practice and in clinical trials. The new concepts in artificial intelligence and digital approaches to automatic pain recognition will be introduced.
?
Chapter 6-Pharmacological and Surgical Approaches to Pain Control
The chapter on the pharmacology of pain will be updated with modern knowledge on the classes of drugs most used in chronic pain clinics. Mechanistic models of personalized medicine will be presented. This approach will allow the various health professionals to better follow the innovations in the treatment of pain.
?
Chapter 7-Nonpharmacological Treatment of Pain
In addition to the conventional approaches (TENS, exercise, meditation), the section on non-pharmacological treatments in chapter 7 will be updated by introducing digital therapy approaches. Several recent studies will be cited to highlight the scientific evidence of approaches such as virtual reality for pain relief. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of using non-pharmacological and pharmacological approaches in parallel in the treatment of pain.
?
Chapter 8-Pain and Age
This chapter is addressing the physiological and psychological angles of pain from newborn to the elderly.
?
Chapter 9-Sex, Gender and pain
This chapter will be reviewed taking into account biological sex, but also gender. Taking into account recommendations from organizations like the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, I would address the importance of considering sex and gender in research, but also when treating pain.?
Chapter 10-Pain: From Innate to Acquired
This chapter is covering the environmental and personal aspects influencing our responses to pain. It will be updated considering the evolution of knowledge in genomics, including environmental factors and epigenetics.
?
Chapter 11-Pain Clinics
Chapter 11 will be updated according to the evolution of the training offered to health professionals, including specialization programs for physicians and other health professionals.?
