Earthquake(지진)는 지구 내부에 store(축적)된 elastic strain energy(탄성 변형 에너지)가 순간적으로 release(방출)되어 earth's crust(지각)가 갈라지고 흔들리는 phenomenon(현상)이다. Earthquake는 fault(단층)를 따라 일어날 때가 많다. 지구 내부에서 force(힘)가 축적되면 fault의 양쪽 rock mass(암반, 암석)가 bend(휘다)한다. 이때 rock mass가 심하게 bend되면 snap(끊어지다)하면서 earth surface(지표면)가 흔들리기 때문에 earthquake가 발생하는 것이다. Earth's crust와 upper mantle(상부 맨틀)은 elasticity(탄성)가 있는 rock(암석)으로 이루어져 있다. 따라서 elasticity limit(탄성 한도) 이내에서 strain(압력)이 오면 earth's crust는 plate glass(판유리)처럼 어느 한도까지는 bend됐다가 force가 없어지면 원래대로 되돌아간다. 그러나 elasticity limit를 넘으면 rock은 끊어지고 이때 발생한 tremor(진동)가 전달되어 earth's crust가 흔들리게 되는데 이것이 바로 earthquake이다.

An earthquake is a naturally induced shaking and vibration of the Earth's surface. The Earth's crust is made up of several large pieces called plates. Earthquakes happen when these plates suddenly slip past one another. The area where these plates meet is called the fault line. When the plates move or slip along the fault line, tension is released and an earthquake occurs. Earthquakes can also be caused by volcanic activity.
