Unit 1. Introduction to TOEIC Part 7

1. 토익 Part 7의 특징
토익 독해 파트에서는 실생활이나 비즈니스 상황에서 사용하는 다양한 이메일, 편지, 광고, 안내문, 공지, 기사, 서식 등의 지문들이 주로 출제된다. 지문을 제대로 이해하여 문제를 풀기 위해서는 각 지문의 기본 양식과 자주 등장하는 표현들을 알아두어야 한다.

2. Part 7의 출제 유형
토익 Part 7은 총 48 문항으로, 1개 지문 유형이 28 문항, 2개 지문 유형이 20 문항 출제된다.

토익에 나오는 독해 문제는 크게 질문 유형과 지문 유형문제로 나누어진다.

1) 질문 유형별
토익 Part 7에 나오는 질문 유형은, 지문의 주제나 목적을 찾는 문제, 특정 세부 사항을 묻는 육하원칙 문제, NOT/True 문제, 추론문제, 그리고 동의어를 찾는 문제로 이루어진다.
2) 지문유형별 1 (1개 지문): 토익 독해의 1개 지문에 나오는 지문 유형은 이메일, 편지, 광고, 안내문, 공지, 기사, 서식 등으로 나누어진다.
지문유형별 2 (2개 지문): 토익 독해의 2개 지문에 나오는 지문 유형은 이메일(편지) 연계 지문, 광고 연계 지문, 기사 연계 지문, 서식 연계 지문 등으로 나눌 수 있다.

3. Part 7의 학습 전략
1) 각 지문 위의 지문을 소개하는 문장을 읽어 지문 유형을 확인한다. 지문 위의 "Questions 문제번호 refer to the following 지문"의 문장을 읽은 후 그 지문의 특징을 생각하면서 문제를 푼다. 지문에 제목이 있는 경우 제목을 통해 지문 전체의 내용을 추측할 수 있다. 2개 지문의 경우, 맨 윗부분의 "Questions 문제번호 refer to the following 첫 번째 지문 and 두 번째 지문"을 읽어 어떤 지문이 연계가 되어 있는지 확인한다.
2) 질문을 읽고 질문이 주제를 묻는 문제인지, 특정 세부 사항을 묻는 문제인지 파악한다. 2개 지문의 경우, 질문을 읽고 질문 유형을 파악함과 동시에 어떤 지문에서 어떤 내용을 찾아야 할 것인지 생각한다.
3) 질문 유형에 따라 다른 전략을 적용하여 정답을 고른다. 주제나 목적을 묻는 질문은 주로 지문의 제목이나 앞부분, 또는 전체의 내용을 바탕으로 답변을 해야 하고, 특정 세부 사항 질문은 질문의 핵심어구와 관련된 내용을 바탕으로 답을 선택한다. 동의어 문제는 질문에서 제시된 어구가 포함된 부분을 찾아 문맥을 확인한다.
2개 지문의 경우, 두 지문의 내용을 종합해야 풀 수 있는 연계문제가 출제되는데 한 개 지문의 단서에서 답을 찾을 수 없을 때는 나머지 지문에서 관련된 단서를 찾아 두 개의 단서를 서로 종합해서 정답을 찾는다.
4) 바꾸어 표현하기(paraphrasing) 연습을 통해 같은 의미를 나타내는 다양한 표현들을 익힌다. 대부분의 경우 지문에 사용된 표현들이 질문과 선택지에 그대로 사용되지 않는다는 점을 알아 둔다.

예제 1: 주제 찾기 문제

주제 찾기 문제란 글의 주제나 글이 쓰여진 목적에 관해 묻는 문제이다. 공고, 편지, 기사, 회람 등 정보 전달을 목적으로 하는 글이 많이 출제되는데, 대부분의 경우 지문의 제목이나 앞부분에 주제나 목적이 나오는 경우가 많다. 가끔 주제가 지문 중간이나 뒷부분에 나와 있는 경우도 있고, 전체를 파악해야 하는 경우도 있다.
