메사추세츠 사우스 워링톤에서 태어났다. 필라델피아의 템플 대학을 설립자로, 최초의 총장이기도 하다. 그리고 침례교의 목사, 연설가, 철학가, 변호사, 작가로도 활동하였다. 다이아몬드의 땅(Acres of Diamonds)은 그가 82세로 타계하기까지 5000번 이상 했던 강의로, 젊은 시절 중동 여행 중에 들은 이야기이다.
