Excerpt

Where Is Massachusetts?

Massachusetts is the seventh-smallest US state in terms of area. It’s also a northeastern state, far from the geographical center of the country. Yet it has been at the heart of US history from the beginning.

The land was named after the Massachusett Tribe, an Indigenous people who have lived there for thousands of years. Another Indigenous group, the Wampanoag (say: waam-puh-nog), helped the first English settlers survive. In time, Massachusetts became one of the thirteen English colonies that fought for their independence and declared themselves the United States of America.

From Plymouth Rock to Paul Revere, Massachusetts is often the first place that comes to mind when thinking about the story of the United States of America. This small state has continued to be a part of American culture, from the creation of the chocolate chip cookie to the invention of basketball! Massachusetts may be where the fight for American independence began, but it’s also a place where people have made decisions and discoveries that have continued to shape the nation.
