ARM은 저전력 저비용 마이크로칩 솔루션으로 노키아의 휴대전화 혁명을 가능케 했고, 애플과 삼성전자의 스마트폰에 탑재되었으며, 이제 그 쓰임새가 데이터센터, 자동차, 그리고 인공지능으로 확대되고 있다. 손정의 회장은 2016년 ARM을 인수하면서 “기술업계의 숨겨진 보석”이라 했고, 인공지능 반도체의 리더 엔비디아의 젠슨황 회장은 2022년 ARM 인수가 좌절된 이후 “ARM이 다음 10년간 가장 중요한 CPU 설계자가 될 거라 확신한다”라고 말했다. 규제당국과 다른 빅테크들의 반대로 엔비디아의 인수는 좌절되었지만, ARM은 결국 2023년 9월 역대 17번째 규모로 나스닥에 상장되었다. ‘반도체의 스위스’라 불리는 ARM은 미중 무역전쟁의 한복판에 놓여 있는 회사이기도 하다. 또한 2020년 AI 반도체의 리더 엔비디아가 ARM을 인수하고자 했을 때 빅테크들이 뭉쳐 인수 시도를 좌절시키기도 했다. 미중 무역전쟁을 이해하기 위해서도, 첨단 기술업계의 지형을 알기 위해서도, 메모리 반도체 강국 대한민국이 비메모리(시스템) 반도체를 육성하기 위해서도 꼭 알아야 할 기업이 바로 ARM이다.
