하버드 대학의 경제학, 철학 교수다. 1998년부터 2004년까지 케임브리지 대학 트리니티 칼리지 학장으로 재직했고 1998년에 노벨 경제학상을 받았으며 미국경제학회장, 인도경제학회장, 국제경제학회장, 계량경제학회장을 지냈다. 『집합 행동과 사회 후생(Collective Choice and Social Welfare)』(1970, 2017), 『자유로서의 발전(Development as Freedom)』(1999), 『아마티아 센, 살아 있는 인도(The Argumentative Indian)』(2005), 『정체성과 폭력: 운명이라는 환영(Identity and Violence: The Illusion of Destiny)』(2007), 『정의의 아이디어(The Idea of Justice)』(2010) 등 다수의 명저를 집필했으며 40개 이상의 언어로 번역되었다. 2012년에는 오바마 대통령으로부터 국가 인문학 훈장(National Humanities Medal)을 받았고 2020년에는 프랑크 발터 슈타인마이어 독일연방공화국 대통령이 수여 연설을 한 독일 서적 협회 평화상(Peace Prize of German Book Trade)을 수상했다.
