1955년에 캐나다에서 태어났고, 현재 몬트리올대학교 철학과 교수다. 독일 튀빙겐대학교에서 고전문헌학, 신학, 철학을 공부했고, 논문 <한스 게오르크 가다머의 진리개념에 관하여(Zum Wahrheitsbegriff Hans-Georg Gadamers)>로 박사 학위를 받았다. 라발대학교와 오타와대학교에서 강의를 했고, 1991년부터 몬트리올대학교에서 학생들을 가르치고 있다. 가다머의 철학적 해석학으로부터 영향을 받으며 해석학적 물음에 꾸준히 천착해왔고, 주된 연구 주제는 칸트, 하이데거, 가다머, 철학적 해석학 등이다. 이와 관련된 많은 책을 썼는데, 특히 《해석학의 보편성(L’universalit? de l' herm?neutique)》은 12개 이상의 언어로 번역되었고, 그 외에도 다양한 철학 저널에 글을 기고해왔다. 이러한 연구 활동을 인정받아 2014년에는 예술, 인문학, 사회과학 분야에서 탁월한 업적을 이룩한 캐나다인에게 수여하는 몰슨(Molson) 상을 수상했다. 지은 책으로 《해석학적 진리? 한스 게오르크 가다머의 진리개념(Hermeneutische Wahrheit? Zum Wahrheitsbegriff Hans-Georg Gadamers)》, 《철학적 해석학 입문(Einf?rung in die philosophische Hermeneutik)》, 《해석학을 위한 감각(Der Sinn f? Hermeneutik)》, 《해석학의 근원(Sources of Hermeneutics)》, 《한스 게오르크 가다머의 일생(Hans-Georg Gadamer. Eine Biographie)》, 《하이데거에서 가다머로, 해석학으로 가는 길(Von Heidegger zu Gadamer, unterwegs zur Hermeneutik)》 등이 있다. 이외에도 가다머의 저서를 번역해 소개하는 데 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다.
