영국 리즈대학교(University of Leeds) 번역학 명예교수이다. 영국 캠브리지 대학교 현대언어학 학사, 리버풀대학교 응용언어학 석사, 브래드포드 대학교 번역학 박사학위를 취득하였다. 번역학, 번역이론, 담화분석, 번역과 이데올로기 등을 주로 연구한다. 주요 저서로는 Introducing Translation Studies (1판 2001 ~ 4판 2016), Evaluation in Translation (2012), Translation: An Advanced Resource Book (2004, 2판 2019)(Basil Hatim과 공저) 등이 있다. 편저로는 The Routledge Companion to Translation Studies (2009), Corpus-based Translation Studies (2011), Discourse Analysis in Translation Studies (2015) 등이 있다.
