영국 맨체스터의 샐퍼드 대학에서 음향 엔지니어링을 가르치는 음향공학과acoustic engineering 교수이자 음향공학연구소 소장이다. 20편의 BBC 라디오 다큐를 제작했으며, 세계에서 가장 긴 소리를 찾는 기네스 기록 보유자이기도 하다. 음향에 대한 공로를 인정받아 ‘영국음향학회’으로부터 2004년 Tyndall 메달을 받았고, 2009년에 음향공학 보급공헌상을 수상했다. 또한 《지상 최고의 사운드》로 ‘미국음향학회’ 과학저작상을 수상했다. 현재 영국 맨체스터에 거주하고 있으며, BBC 라디오, 디스커버리 채널, 내셔널지오그래픽 등 다양한 대중매체에 출연해 음향에 대해 대중에게 알기 쉽게 해설하고 있다.
