오스트레일리아 시드니에서 태어났다. 1981년 시드니 대학에서 철학 전공으로 박사학위를 받았다. 미국 뉴욕 주립 대학교 비교문학과 교수를 역임했으며, 뉴저지 럿저 대학교에서 여성학을 가르쳤다. 현재 듀크 대학교 여성학 교수로 재직 중이다. 저서에 『성적인 전복Sexual Subversions: Three French Feminists』(1989), 『자크 라캉Jacques Lacan: A Feminist Introduction』(1990), 『공간, 시간, 도착Space, Time, and Perversion: Essays on the Politics of Bodies』(1995), 『건축, 그 바깥에서Architecture from the Outside: Essays on Virtual and Real Space』(2001), 『혼돈, 영토, 예술Chaos, Territory, Art: Deleuze and the Framing of the Earth』(2008), 『미결 되기Becoming Undone: Darwinian Reflections on Life, Politics, and Art』(2011), 『비육체적인 것The Incorporeal: Ontology, Ethics, and the Limits of Materialism』(2017) 등이 있다.
