About the Author

Naguib Mahfouz was born in Cairo in 1911 and began writing when he was seventeen. His nearly forty novels and hundreds of short stories range from re-imaginings of ancient myths to subtle commentaries on contemporary Egyptian politics and culture. Of his many works, most famous is The Cairo Trilogy, consisting of Palace Walk (1956), Palace of Desire (1957), and Sugar Street (1957), which focuses on a Cairo family through three generations, from 1917 until 1952. In 1988, he was the first writer in Arabic to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. He died in August 2006.

1911년 12월 11일 이집트 카이로 알자말리야에서 태어났다. 중산층 가정의 7남매 중 막내로 어려서부터 박물관에 자주 다니며 이집트 역사에 관심을 가졌고, 1919년 이집트 혁명을 목격한 뒤 그에 큰 영향을 받았다. 푸아드 1세 대학교에 입학해 철학을 공부하며 작가가 되기로 결심했다. 1938년 스물여덟 편의 단편이 수록된 단편집 『광기의 속삭임』을 출간한 후 아버지의 뒤를 이어 공무원으로 일하면서 작품 활동을 계속했다. 1943년 역사 소설 『누비아의 라도비스』, 1947년 사실주의 소설 『미다끄 골목』 등을 발표했다. 1952년 『궁전 샛길』, 『욕망의 궁전』, 『설탕 거리』로 이루어진 가족사 소설인 ‘카이로 3부작’을 완성, 1956~57년에 연이어 출간하면서 ‘이집트의 발자크’라는 평을 받으며 소설가로서 확고한 명성을 다졌다. 1952년 압델 나세르의 7월 혁명이 성공한 후 새 정권에 실망한 마흐푸즈는 절필을 선언했지만, 1959년 다시 펜을 들어 종교적인 알레고리가 담긴 대작 『우리 동네 아이들』을 이집트 주요 일간지 《알아흐람》에 연재했다. 당시 이 작품은 이슬람교에 대한 신성 모독을 범했다는 이유로 금서가 되었다가 우여곡절 끝에 1967년 레바논에서 초판이 출간되었다. 1988년 “현실을 통찰력 있게 꿰뚫는 동시에 지난 일을 어렴풋이 떠올리게 하는 뉘앙스가 풍부한 작품으로 인류 전체가 공감할 만한 아랍 고유의 서사 예술을 구현했다.”라는 극찬을 받으며 아랍어권 작가 최초로 노벨 문학상을 수상했다. 1994년 이슬람 원리주의자 테러리스트가 휘두른 칼에 목을 찔려 신경 손상을 입는 등 정치적으로 위협을 받으면서도 꾸준한 작품 활동으로 아랍 문학의 위상을 높이는 데 전념했다. 2006년 8월 30일 카이로에서 세상을 떠났다.
