케임브리지 대학에서 인류학과 고고학 박사학위를 취득하고 현재 유니버시티칼리지런던University College London에서 인류학과 교수로 재직하고 있다. 밀러는 현재 가장 저명하고 인용이 많이 되는 인류학자 중의 한 명으로, 주된 관심사는 쇼핑, 소비, 옷, 주거, 초국적 가사노동과 모성, 호스피스와 노화, 인터넷, 디지털인류학과 소셜미디어 등과 같이 물질문화와 대중문화 전반에 걸쳐 있다. 2000년대 들어 청바지, 인터넷, 핸드폰 등을 매개로 한 사회관계 및 사회현상의 형성과 변화에 주목해왔다. 2012년부터는 새로운 소셜미디어에 대한 초대형 연구 프로젝트를 추진해, 2016년 “우리가 포스팅하는 이유Why We Post”를 출간했다. 『청바지 인류학Global Denim』(2011)을 포함하여 『물질문화material Cultures』(1998),『쇼핑의 이론A Theory of Shopping』(1998), 『핸드폰The Cell Phone: An Anthropology of Communiacation』(2006), 『물건Stuff』(2010), 『오페어Au-Pair』, 『페이스북Tales from Facebook』, 『디지털인류학Digital Anthropology』(2012), 『웹캠Webcam』(2014) 등 37권의 책을 쓰고 편집했다.
