웰즐리 칼리지(Wellesley College) 역사학 교수, 하버드 대학 페어뱅크 센터(Fairbank Center for East Asian Research) 연구위원(a research associate). 시카고 대학을 졸업하고 하버드 대학 대학원에서 존 페어뱅크(John K. Fairbank)와 벤자민 슈워츠(Benjamin I. Schwartz)의 지도를 받으면서 중국 근대사상사를 공부했다. 중국과 서양의 문화접촉, 특히 1860년대 기독교 포교에 관한 중국인의 반응을 분석한 논문으로 박사학위를 받았다. 저서에 『China and Christianity：The Missionary Movement and the Growth of Chinese Antiforeignism』(Harvard University Press, 1963), 『Between Tradition and Modernity：Wang T'ao and Reform in Late Ch'ing China』(Harvard University Press, 1974), 『History in Three Keys：The Boxers as Event, Experience, and Myth』(New York：Columbia University Press, 1997) 등이 있으며, 그가 주축이 되어 『Reform in Nineteenth-Century China』(East Asian Research Center, Harvard University, 1976) 등을 엮기도 했다.
