미국 메릴랜드대학교 교육대학 명예교수이다. 학생 개인차, 독해 과정, 독서 평가를 중심 주제로 연구해 왔으며, 미국의 국가교육과학원(NAEd) 위원 및 2026년 개정 국가교육발전평가(NAEP) 읽기 평가 체제 개발위원을 역임하는 등 문해력 정책 분야에서도 왕성하게 활동해 왔다. 2009년에는 국제문해력협회(ILA) 명예의 전당에 이름을 올렸고, 미국교육연구학회(AERA)의 명예회원으로 수많은 학술지와 저서를 통해서 학계와 교육계에 다양한 이론적·실제적 작업들을 기여해 왔다. 대학에서 교편을 잡기 전에는 초등학교에서 읽기 전담 교사로, 중학교에서는 영어 교사로 아이들을 가르쳤다.
