하버드대학교에서 물리학을 전공하고 예일대에서 경제학 석사를, U.C.버클리에서 경제학 박사 학위를 받았다. 미국의 대표적인 원로 좌파 경제학자 중 한 명으로, 사회적 축적 구조 이론(SSA)에 근거해 자본주의 체제의 공황과 제도적 재편을 연구했다. 또한 구 공산권 국가들의 자본주의 체제 이행 문제에 대해서도 보수적인 주류 경제학계와 날카롭게 대립하는 견해를 제시하고 있다. 미국의 대표적인 좌파 경제학과 중 하나인 매사추세츠주립대 경제학과(University of Massachusetts Amherst) 학과장으로 20년간 대학원 과정을 이끌었고 현재는 동 대학 명예교수로 재직 중이다. 또한 상하이재경대학(Shangai University of Finance and Economics) 정치경제학 공동 학과장 및 특훈 교수로 재직 중이다. 대표 저서로 《고르바초프부터 푸틴까지: 소련 체제의 몰락과 신 러시아 (Russia's Path from Gorbachev to Putin: The Demise of the Soviet System and the New Russia)》, 《미국에서의 은행의 대기업 통제(Bank Control of Large Corporations in the United States)》 등이 있으며, 공황론, 사회적 축적 구조론, 체제 이행론 및 대안 체제 분야에 걸쳐 다수의 논문을 집필했다.
