세계적으로 주목받는 교통·운수 분야 전문가로, 각종 언론매체를 통해 적극적으로 활약하는 저널리스트이다. 1971년 워릭대학교를 졸업한 뒤 여러 신문사에서 기자로 활동했고, 1989년부터 1997년까지 《인디펜던트》지에 기고했다. 그 뒤 프리랜서로서 주로 철도 관련 기사를 활발하게 기고했고, 1990년대부터는 단행본도 출간했다. 주요 저서로 런던 지하철의 사회사를 주제로 한 The Subterranean Railway(2004), 영국 철도사를 다룬 Fire and Steam(2007), 전쟁과 철도의 관계에 초점을 맞춘 Engines of War(2010) 등이 있다.
