미국의 건축가이자 사진작가로 2017년 현재 일리노이 대학교 어바나·샴페인 캠퍼스의 건축학과 명예교수로 있다. 매사추세츠 공과대학교(MIT) 건축학부에서 모리스 스미스Maurice Smith 교수에게 건축을, 고등시각연구센터the Center for Advanced Visual Studies에서 기오르기 케페스Gyorgy Kepes 교수에게 라이트 아트light art를 사사했다. 오리건 대학교 건축학부의 특임교수를 역임했으며, 사진에 관한 연구로 로렌스 B. 앤더슨 상을 수상했다. 저서로는 『빛의 시학』(1987), 『정적과 빛: 셰이커 건축의 묵시적 웅변』(2009), 『빛의 우주: 르 코르뷔제의 신성한 건축』(2013) 등이 있다. 그의 최근작인 『건축의 경험』(2016)에는 인간의 자발적인 힘을 북돋을 수도 있고, 끌어내릴 수도 있는 건축의 힘에 주목해 건축가이자 사진가인 저자가 오랜 시간 밀도 있게 연구한 결과를 담았다. 그의 연구는 우리에게 공간적 활동의 주체로서 건축을 ‘경험할 수 있는’ 기회와 자유를 선사하고 있다.
