캘리포니아대학교 버클리 캠퍼스의 고전학 명예교수 겸 철학 교수로, 헬레니즘 철학 연구의 선두자로 꼽힌다. 현재 캘리포니아주 켄싱턴에 거주 중이며, 은퇴한 이후에도 대학원에서 고전과 철학을 가르치고 있다. 『에픽테토스: 스토아적이고 소크라테스적인 삶의 안내자 Epictetus: A Stoic and Socratic Guide to Life』, 『스토아철학 연구 Stoic Studies』, 『세네카: 윤리 서한 Seneca: Letters on Ethics』(마거릿 그래버Margaret Graver 공저)를 비롯해 많은 스토아 철학서를 집필했다.
