영국 성공회 사제이자 신학자로 케임브리지 트리니티 칼리지의 펠로, 런던 그레셤 칼리지의 그레셤 신학 교수, 랭커스터 대학, 펜실베이니아 대학, 노스캐롤라이나 주립대학의 종교학 교수를 역임했다. 저서와 편저로 『사진과 그림으로 보는 성서』(시공사), 『옥스퍼드 세계 종교 사전The Oxford Dictionary of World Religions』, 『신의 의미The Sense of God』, 『세계를 바꾼 믿음들Beliefs That Changed the World』 등이 있다.
