미네소타대학 비교근세사학 유니언퍼시픽 석좌교수를 거쳐 현재 명예교수로 활동하고 있다. 윌리엄 D. 필립스 주니어와 공동 집필한 『스페인의 황금 양모: 중세에서 19세기까지의 양모 생산과 무역Spain’s Golden Fleece: Wool Production and the Wool Trade from the Middle Ages to the Nineteenth Century』(1997)으로 1998년 미국역사협회 레오 거쇼이 상을, 단독 집필한 『산 호세의 보물The Treasure of San Jose』(2007)로 미국출판협회 학술 부문 세계사 및 전기 분야 우수상을 수상하는 등 여러 저서로 학계와 대중에게 이름을 알렸다.
