예일 대학교 정치학과 교수. 남아프리카공화국 출신으로 영국 브리스틀 대학교에서 철학과 정치학을 공부하고 예일 대학교 정치학과에 입학해 민주주의?다원주의 이론가 로버트 달의 제자가 됐다. 1983년 박사 학위 논문 “자유주의 정치사상에서의 권리의 진화”(The Evolution of Rights in Liberal Political Though)로 미국정치학회가 수여하는 레오 스트라우스 상을 받았다. 1984년부터 예일 대학에서 가르쳤고, 2005년 예일 대학교가 한 분야 최고의 학자에게 수여하는 스털링 교수직에 올랐다. 샤피로의 주된 관심 분야는 정의와 민주주의, 민주주의와 부의 분배, 탈공산주의 이후 민주주의의 지속 가능성 등이다. 저서로는 The Wolf at the Door(공저, 2020), Politics Against Domination(2016), 『민주주의 이론의 실세계』(2010), Flight From Reality in the Human Sciences(2005; 『현실에서 도피하는 인문사회과학』 2018), The Moral Foundations of Politics(2003; 『정치의 도덕적 기초』 2017) 등이 있다.
