의료윤리를 연구하는 철학자. 런던대학교 의료윤리 및 인문학부 명예교수이며, 영국 하원 과학기술위원회의 자문위원으로도 활동 중이다. 생명공학기술을 둘러싼 첨예한 윤리 논쟁을 대중적 언어로 설명하는 데 탁월하다. 여러 신문, 방송, 팟캐스트를 통해 안락사, 신체 이식 등의 이슈를 다루어왔다. 특히 줄기세포나 체외수정 등의 중요한 생명공학기술이 여성의 희생을 당연시하는 것에 문제의식을 품고 여러 생명윤리 사안을 분석했다. 공적 윤리 논쟁에 기여한 공로로 2006년에는 현대 윤리학에 기여한 과학자와 철학자에게 수여하는 국제 스피노자 렌즈 상(International Spinoza Lens award)을 여성 최초로 수상했다. 지은 책으로 《인체 쇼핑(Body Shopping)》 등이 있다.
