1931년 그리스에서 태어나 데살로니카 대학교와 아테네 대학교 신학부를 졸업하고, 하버드 대학교에서 교부학을 공부하고, 비잔티움 연구를 위한 덤바턴 옧 센터의 연구원으로 있었다. 1965년 아테네 대학교에서 신학박사 학위를 받았다. 아테네 대학교, 에든버러 대학교, 글래스고 대학교, 데살로니카 대학교 교수를 역임하였고, 현재 콘스탄티노폴리스 에큐메니컬 총대주교구 페르가몬(버가모) 대주교와 아테네 아카데미 의장이다. 세계교회협의회의 신앙과 직제 위원회에서 일했고, 가장 영향력 있는 차세대 정교회 신학자 가운데 한 사람으로 인정받았다. 에큐메니컬 총대주교구의 한 대표자로서 로마 가톨릭과의 대화를 위한 국제위원회 위원이다.
