파리에서 태어나 소르본대학교에서 문학박사 학위를 받았고(1913) 스트라스부르대학교(1919-1921)와 소르본대학교를 거쳐(1921-1932) 콜레주 드 프랑스로 옮겨 은퇴하기까지(1932-1950) 가르쳤으며, 중세 사상 관련 여러 학술지들을 창간하고 주관하였다. 1929년에는 캐나다 토론토로 건너가 중세사상연구소(PIMS)를 창립하고 중세철학사 연구주임으로 임명되었고 하버드대학교에서도 교환교수로 교편을 잡는 등 대륙을 오가며 학술 활동을 했다. 프랑스학술원, 네델란드왕립학술원, 영국학술원, 교황청 성토마스학회 등의 회원으로 활동했다. 우리말로 『아우구스티누스 사상의 이해』(누멘), 『중세철학사』(현대지성사), 『성 토마스의 지혜와 사랑』(한국성토마스연구소), 『존재와 사유』(이문출판사), 『존재란 무엇인가』, 『중세철학입문』(이상 서광사) 등이 출간되었다.
