1933년 영국 랭거스터에서 출생하여 맨체스터대학에서 학부(신학 전공) 및 석사(종교학 전공)를 마치고 스웨덴 웁살라대학에서 신학 박사학위를 받았다. 이후 영국의 맨체스터대학과 랭거스터대학, 그리고 호주의 시드니대학에서 종교학 교수로 재직하며 종교현상학, 그리스도교 선교사(宣敎史), 종교 간 대화, 종교학 방법론에 관한 여러 업적을 남겼다. 특히 국제종교학회(IAHR)의 사무총장으로 활동하며 종교연구 방법론과 관련된 논쟁에 활발히 참여하기도 했다. 그의 대표 저서인 『종교학의 전개』는 종교학이 학문 분야로 발전해 온 역사적 과정을 다룬 본격적인 첫 연구서로 꼽힌다.
