영국 케임브리지 대학 역사학과를 졸업하고 같은 대학에서 역사학 박사학위를 받았다. 현재 버밍엄 대학 중세사 정교수로 재직하며 영국 중세 대학, 종교와 사회에 대해 광범위하게 연구하고 있다. 1994-2001년까지 영국교회사학회 발행 논문집 Studies in Church History의 편집장을 역임했으며, 2007-2008년까지 영국교회사학회 회장을 지냈다. 주요 저작으로는 Universities, Academics, and the Great Schism(1979), Church and Society in Late Medieval England(1989), Catholic England (1989), Religion and Devotion in Europe, c. 1215- c. 1515(1995), Promissory Notes on the Treasury of Merits: Indulgences in Late Medieval Europe, ed.(2006), Indulgences in Late Medieval England(2007) 등이 있다.
