1930년 프랑스 남서부의 당갱에서 태어나 뛰어난 학업 성적으로 파리 고등사범학교(ENS)에 입학했다. 25세에 철학 교수자격시험에 합격한 뒤 군 복무를 위해 알제리에 갔다가 식민지 현실과 전쟁의 참상에 큰 충격을 받고 사회학자로 전향했다. 프랑스 학계의 관행을 거부하며 박사 학위를 받지 않았지만, 탁월한 연구 성과를 인정받아 파리 사회과학고등연구원(EHESS)의 교수가 되었다. 1981년에는 프랑스 지식인들의 최고 영예로 꼽히는 콜레주드프랑스 교수(사회학 전공)에 선임되어 2001년 정년퇴임할 때까지 재직했다. 2002년 72세의 나이로 삶을 마감했다. 부르디외의 작업은 사회학을 넘어 철학, 미학, 인류학, 교육학, 경제학, 정치학, 문화연구 등 인문사회과학 전반에 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 그는 또 당대의 사회문제에 적극적으로 발언하고 개입한 실천적 지식인이기도 했다. 대표작으로 『구별짓기』, 『실천감각』, 『실천이성』, 『파스칼적 명상』 등이 있으며, 사후에도 『국가에 대하여』를 비롯한 콜레주드프랑스 강의록과 논문집의 출간이 이어지고 있다.
