스위스의 학자이며 탐험가. 취리히대학교에서 심리학, 철학, 미술사를 전공하였다. Society for the Exploration of EurAsia 창립회원이며 현재 회장이다. 또한 Royal Asiatic Society, Royal Geographical Society 및 Explorer’s Club(New York) 회원이다. 바우머는 1984년부터 중앙아시아, 중국, 티베트 등지를 탐험하면서 활발한 저술 활동을 하고 있다. 특히 1994년부터 2009년까지 네 차례에 걸쳐 타클라마칸 국제탐험대를 이끌고 중앙아시아에서 유적과 유물을 발굴하였다. 1993년부터 세 차례나 중국 산시 성 우타이 산 일대를 찾아 중국 불교의 원류를 탐색하였으며, 1996년 티베트 남부에서 12세기 초 불교유적을 찾아냈다. 2000~2005년에는 터키 남동부, 몽골, 중국, 인도 남부 등지에서 동방교회의 흔적을 더듬었다. 주요 저서로는 The History of Central Asia, volumes Ⅰ-Ⅲ(2012, 2014, 2016), China’s Holy Mountain: An Illustrated Journey into the Heart of Buddhism(2011), Traces in the Desert: Journeys of Discovery across Central Asia(2008), Southern Silk Road: In the Footsteps of Sir Aurel Stein and Sven Hedin(2004), Tibet’s Ancient Religion(2002) 등이 있다.
